These capabilities help increase the accuracy of the information to the insurer, increase the productivity of medical claims coding staff, decrease claims rejected by health plans or missed charges and speed time to payment. NLP can also be used to improve the meaningful use of EHRs by identifying holes in current documentation practices and specific clinicians who may need additional support with regards to best practices.

“OptumInsight’s patented NLP technology is helping hospitals increase coder accuracy and productivity today. It will help support the transition to the more complex ICD-10 code system, and information used for measuring quality, best practice adherence and documentation improvement,” said Mark Morsch, vice president of technology, OptumInsight.

Ohio Health, a network of not-for-profit hospitals in Central Ohio, made significant gains in coding efficiency when five of its hospitals implemented OptumInsight’s CAC solution. OptumInsight’s CAC solution helped Ohio Health realize a 106-percent increase in productivity among diagnostic coders and a 60-percent increase in emergency department coding within months of using the technology. Ohio Health hopes to realize an improved case mix for inpatient services over the longer term, a critical measurement for ensuring accurate Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates.

Implementing OptumInsight’s CAC is also foundational to Ohio Health’s ICD-10 readiness efforts. By October 2013, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requires all health care providers to code medical claims using the ICD-10 classification system, a 155,000-line index of medical diagnoses and procedures that replaces the 17,000-line ICD-9 system. As a result, hospitals and physicians offices face an increased demand for coding resources and are at greater risk of lost revenue and productivity from bottlenecks, inaccuracies, denials and delays in the coding process.

“ICD-10 requires a lot more data knowledge and will take more time to code correctly,” Diane Setty, Ohio Health’s corporate director for health information management. “We wanted to make sure that we had sufficient resources to accommodate the additional time required to use ICD-10 accurately. We knew OptumInsight’s CAC solution had the capability to do what we needed today, and will enable us to work more rapidly within the coming ICD-10 environment.”

LifeCode Technology

OptumInsight’s NLP system received its first patent in 2005 for its architecture and sophisticated method of interpreting the context of words used in clinical documentation and assigning meaning. It has continually been refined for more than a decade, reading more than 300,000,000 medical documents since its creation and over 5.5 million medical documents per month.

Supporting Resources:

Visit Optum’s CAC resource page online

Request AHIMA’s CAC Report featuring Measuring the Performance of CAC

Read more about Ohio Health’s success with CAC

About OptumInsight
OptumInsight provides health information, technology and consulting services. Commercial health plans, physicians, hospitals, life sciences companies, government agencies and other organizations that comprise the health care system depend on OptumInsight solutions and insights to improve their performance. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will require all health care organizations to use ICD-10 when coding medical documentation by Oct. 1, 2013.

ICD-10 includes more than 155,000 medical codes and replaces ICD-9, which included approximately 17,000 codes. The expanded code set will facilitate better analysis of disease patterns and treatment outcomes; however, it may also increase the time required to process medical claims and the potential for errors, which could lead to more rejected claims and higher administrative costs.

“CAC capabilities will help us manage increasing administrative challenges, such as the impending ICD-10 implementation deadline, while controlling costs,” Dreading said.

How Ingenix’s CAC technology works

Medical coding is the process of documenting clinical diagnoses and procedures by assigning numerical codes that can be used for billing and health care provider performance measurement programs. Ingenix’s CAC solution features Ingenix Web.Strat, which provides Internet-based reference and encoding tools, and LifeCode®, a proprietary natural language processing system that automates the reading of clinical documentation, deciphers the meaning and context of words within medical records and recommends the appropriate codes. The system then presents a consolidated view of each case to medical coding staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital, who can either confirm the suggested codes or conduct additional research to validate them.

For hospital managers, the system also provides comprehensive reporting tools that gauge individual coder productivity, assess Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) frequency and determine the hospital’s case-mix index –critical measurements for ensuring accurate Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates.

“Ingenix’s CAC technology combines innovative natural language processing capabilities with leading claims encoding technology, and will play an important role in critical ICD-10 preparedness efforts at Wayne Memorial Hospital,” said Ron Jones, senior vice president of hospital solutions at Ingenix. “The advanced capabilities of LifeCode technology will ensure comprehensive, accurate results that help medical coders be more efficient and effective, while providing support for coding requirements across inpatient and outpatient specialties and all venues of care.”

Wayne Memorial Hospital joins Bethesda Healthcare System in Florida, Gwinnett Medical Center in Georgia and HealthEast Care System in Minnesota among leading regional health care systems that have recently selected Ingenix solutions to support their medical coding, compliance and financial performance improvement efforts.

About Wayne Memorial Hospital

Wayne Memorial Hospital has evolved from its humble beginnings 114 years ago as a one-room emergency hospital to a nationally accredited hospital in Eastern North Carolina, licensed for 316 beds and serving citizens of Wayne and surrounding counties. As a result of its growth and financial stability, the hospital has continued to expand and renovate facilities on its 97-acre campus, adding a new wing, a new MRI unit, a new cafeteria, new laundry and new power plant. The acquisition is the next logical step to the strategic alliance Ingenix and A-Life Medical established last year to develop advanced coding solutions for the health care market. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Ingenix has a long established history of providing leading medical coding research and encoding tools to hospitals and physician practices. A-Life Medical is the leading provider of computer-assisted coding (CAC) software. Together, the companies will accelerate development of advanced coding solutions for all billing services providers, physician practices and in-patient and out-patient providers, as well as for more medical specialties.

“Combining A-Life Medical with Ingenix is an extension of our strategic alliance that enables deeper integration of our complementary technologies to create more powerful coding solutions for our clients,” said Bill Miller, executive vice president of health care delivery solutions at Ingenix. “Even as the volume of medical claims grows, health care providers face increasing pressure to reduce administrative costs. These challenges will become more acute as 30 million more Americans obtain health insurance because of health care reform, and as regulatory requirements such as the transition to the ICD-10 coding system come into effect. Together, A-Life Medical and Ingenix will create advanced coding solutions to help our clients manage these challenges efficiently.”

“Ingenix has unparalleled expertise in medical coding, and together, we can truly advance the science of coding technology to create a single, advanced CAC platform that supports coding across all venues of care,” said A-Life Medical President and CEO, Jaye Connolly. “In addition to helping our clients increase coding accuracy and compliance, we’ll help them achieve greater efficiencies through improved productivity and reducing the cost of managing disparate coding tools. We’ve already proven the success of this model, which can now be extended for billing services providers and physician practices.”

Currently, medical claims coders use manual processes, supported by un-connected, single-purpose systems. Clinical documentation is reviewed individually by medical coding staff who identify diagnoses and related procedures provided during patient care. These events must have codes assigned to them for use in billing and performance measurement programs. Coders use one system to research medical codes and another to create encoded documents. Inefficiencies in medical coding add more than $8 billion in administrative costs to the health care system, result in billing and payment errors and slow payments to health care providers.

A-Life Medical has developed LifeCode®, a patented Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology that assists medical coders and clinical abstractors through various software applications, including Actus®, A-Life Medical’s industry leading CAC product. LifeCode reads clinical documentation, deciphers the meaning and context of words within medical records and correctly identifies diagnoses and procedures provided during patient care. The software then recommends appropriate and compliant ICD-9 and CPT-4 codes. Coding staff then confirm the suggested codes or conduct additional research to validate them or adjust them.

CAC to ease transition to ICD-10

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires all health care organizations to use the Statistical Classification of Disease and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) when encoding medical documentation by October 1, 2013. ICD-10 is a sophisticated index of more than 155,000 codes that describe medical conditions and their severity. It will replace ICD-9, which had just 17,000 codes.

According to CMS, ICD-10 will facilitate better analysis of disease patterns, severity and treatment outcomes, and support health care quality improvement efforts. However, the vastly expanded code set will increase the time required to process documentation and the potential for errors, which lead to rejected claims and higher administrative costs. CAC technologies from Ingenix and A-Life Medical will enable physician practices and hospitals to transition to ICD-10 efficiently and without expanding their existing staff.

About A-Life Medical

San Diego-based A-Life Medical, Inc. is the pioneer and leading provider of computer-assisted coding products and services for the healthcare industry. As the health system provides medical care to more patients, its claims administration workload and expenses are increasing.

Ingenix has combined its Web.Strat encoding tool with A-Life Medical’s computer-assisted coding technology to help health care facilities like Gwinnett improve claim coding accuracy, increase staff productivity and control administrative costs. The solution is supported by LifeCode®, a proprietary natural language processing system that automates the reading of clinical documentation, deciphers the meaning and context of words within medical records and recommends the appropriate codes. Medical coding staff at Gwinnett Health System can then either confirm the suggested codes or conduct additional research to validate them.

“The solution from Ingenix and A-Life Medical will enable us to manage our growing volume of medical claims much more efficiently,” said Carol Fowler, Gwinnett Health System director of health information management. “In addition to helping us resolve serious business and resource challenges, these technologies will be an integral foundation for impending regulatory and performance management initiatives.”

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will require all health care organizations to transition to coding medical transactions with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10) by Oct. 1, 2013. The new index

replaces ICD-9, which included approximately 17,000 medical codes, with a significantly expanded and more highly detailed taxonomy of more than 155,000 codes.

CMS is implementing ICD-10 to support better analysis of medical conditions and health care quality improvement efforts; however, the dramatic expansion of potential codes stands to make medical coding workflows more complex and time-consuming. Advanced coding solutions from Ingenix and A-Life Medical will enable Gwinnett to manage increased coding demands without expanding its administrative staff.

“Gwinnett Health System is a model for using advanced technology to address issues of cost and compliance,” said Ron Jones, senior vice president of Hospital Solutions at Ingenix. “Ingenix provides comprehensive solutions to our clients’ business challenges. By working with A-Life Medical, we’re helping hospitals and health systems increase staff productivity, manage their financial health and support their transition to ICD-10.”

“As hospital coding requirements become more complex, Ingenix and A-Life Medical have the necessary tools and services to ensure hospitals can meet new requirements,” said Jaye Connolly, president at A-Life Medical.

About Gwinnett Health System in Georgia

Gwinnett Health System is a not-for-profit healthcare network providing award-winning healthcare services to the Gwinnett community and beyond.
